Weather on La Palma

Geografic Orientation Wind Systems Important Hints

1. Geografic orientation

La Palma is located in the Atlantic Ocean. The high mountains are responsible for a microclima. The normal weather rules appropriate for the alps are mostly not working the same way on la Palma. There are situations where flying is totally forbidden in the alps (Föhn) but possible on la Palma. But it is important to understand there is also the oposite possible. There are weather situations when rules for the alps telling you OK, but on la Palma, you can fly into dangerous situations.
La Palma is close to the Equator. This is responsible for much stronger sun of a factor of appx. 1.6 compared with central Europe. Take in mind, thermic developments could sometimes also be strong.

2. Wind systems

Islands are building a natural barrier against the main wind. On La Palma, there are therefore very local wind systems. Supported with thermics, they may not only be very local but also very complex. For example, it could be possible to fly in Puerto Naos whereas the wind is as strong as 60 km/h only a few km south or north. Pilots which are flying cross country must keep this always in mind!!! The special shape of the island divert the passat winds and implies most of the time flying on the lee side. Lee thermic is not only often strong, the wheater conditions may change very rapidly. Therefore la Palma is not recommended for beginners.

3. Important Hints

  • Do not hesitate to ask local pilots for more informaion. Ask them about the situation and let them explain. You can find them in Puerto Naos close to the landing spot at the beach. If there are no pilots in the air nor at the beach, you should take this as hint of bad conditions even if the sky is blue...

  • Always check the sea. It is a wounderful indicator for whats going on. If the waves in the sea are building foam, this is indicating strong wind. You should not start and if already airborne, land immediately. Always also keep the development of the clouds in mind. Changing wind in the mountains are seen. No clouds = Risk! Do not start before having consulted the weather page in Puerto Naos!

  • Do not fly at the cliff in Puerto Naos if there is nord wind. Even with ligh tendency towards Nord. Nord wind is always developing heavy turbulencies and is therefore dangerous.

  • Discover the island slowly. Distance to the cliff always means more security.

  • While in the mountains, be aware of rotors and check the main wind before take off. And now, enjoy this Beauty and always happy landing.
