Orientation Geographics

1. Orientation

The island la Palma is in the atlantic ocean at appx. 280 nord and 170 west. Together with the other 6 Islands it is building the canarian islands.

2. Island Geographics

La Palma has a relatively small surface with a N-S span of only appx. 48 km and a maximal W-O span of appx. 30 km. The highest mountain is the " Roque de los Muchachos " with 2400 msl. The Roque is part of the very big Caldera. It is a crater with gigantic size. The caldera is one of the spanish national reserves. Hiking is allowed.

From the caldera in direction south, there are hundreds of vulcanos with different hights over the sea level.

Aligned with the caldera south, there is the "cumbre vjecha ". This region is located in the middle of the island and its high is with a maximum of 1000 msl relatively low. If you have problems in identifying the cumbre on the map, you can easily find it because there is a car tunnel under it, connecting the east with the westside. In the picture up you will see the caldera with the cumbre vjecha at the right side.

Furthermore down to the south, there is the famous routas de las vulcanos. This is a very wellknown hiking area. The first vulcano in named Birigojo. This vulcano has a highth of 1800 msl. It is also a paragliding mountain but most of the time, there is too much wind and it could be dangerous. You can find more details in the chapter Start- and Landing spots.

There are houndreds of vulcanos following in direction south and the level above sea gets smaller and smaller until the village "Fuencaliente"(Hot springs).
