Treatment of your Parachute

Overview Wet Emergency Dirt Cord Mix up

1. Service

1.1. Overview

The Swiss Paragliding Association (SHV) recommends to open the emergency parachute every 4 months, leave it for at least 24 hours at around 65% humidity and fold it afterwards as recommended by the vendor. There may be special legal requirements in your country. It is the solely responsibility of you to strictly follow them. Storage - as well as conditions while in the air - are important factors influencing the packing intervals. The emergency should not be stored near electronic motors (Ozone) but in a dry and cool place. While being at the take off spot, take care not to put it in snow or on a wet ground. If the emergency gets wet without immediate opening, drying and refolding, it could get mouldy and must then be replaced. During repacking, all rubbers must be replaced. Old rubbers may dissolve and influence therefore the opening time or - in worst case - may even prevent the opening whwn it is most needed!

1.2. Wet Emergency

As already described wet emergencies must immediately opened and repacked as recommended by the vendor after full drying.

1.3. Dirt

You may wash most emergency parashutes in the wash maschine or by hand. If you like to wash it in the maschine, be aware to use moderate temperature (wool program) as well as a very mild detergent. Put all cords in a bag to prevent knots. After cleaning, you must let it dry for long time. Water may rest specially in the seams for long time.

1.4. Cord mix up

To resolve chord mix up (knots in the cords), I recommend the following: Start with one cord at the emergency seam. Slide back to the connecting cord and resolve this first cord until it is free. Start with the second one beside the first resolved one, again at the seam. Soon, the mix up will disapear. The same procedure is also helping while resolving knots for paragliders. Start then with the middle A-cord.
